Introduction

Deed Printing have been helping self publishers for more than 36 years. In the early days of our company we had to keystroke every word on the mechanical linotype machine. Then came the cumbersome computing typesetting equipment with special photographic paper. With these processes editing was a nightmare and books used to take several months to produce. Today the process is much smoother. Most authors have access to a computer for keyboarding of material and even if you don't we can still help. Scanning of pictures and words and importation of text makes editing and changing manuscripts a much easier task today.

We offer a free consultation service for anyone planning to produce a book. We can give advice on a range of related matters like obtaining an ISBN (International Standards Book Number), copyright, how to obtain a bar-code, marketing and distribution. We offer this information free of charge to our clients.

Over the years we have learnt a lot about book production and book publishing. Because of our experience we can offer professional advice from some of the most highly qualified trades people in the printing industry in New Zealand. What's more we love what we do.

We have a perfected formula that has worked well for many of our clients and we have a good quantity of testimonials on work completed.

Where to start

Many clients do not have the opportunity to contact us before they start their project. This is fine as we can generally work with any manuscript. However, contact with us in the early stages before much keyboard work has been completed will save you time and money in the process by effortless importation of text into our printing programme.

In the details that follow we will give you an overview of some of the most commonly asked questions. If we don't cover a particular query you may have, please contact us, we are happy to help.

Personal contact with our clients is one of our strongest points. It is essential we get to know what our clients require and understand the story line of the manuscript. We appoint a job manager to your job that is the contact you will have to help and solve any questions you may have. We also value the fact that our clients become our friends.

Covers

We offer a full colour printing service for your book covers which allows you to include colour photographs and graphics to enhance your product. There is a saying: "You can't judge a book by it's cover." Well this is true of course when one relates the phrase to the text, but from a marketing point of view a well designed cover does help push your book to the front when it is included in a wide array of titles within a book store.

We will in most cases, recommend cover lamination. This is a film of clear plastic which is applied to the outside of a cover to provide protection against marking and scuffing. Available in several different finishes it enhances the look of any book. Gloss laminations are the most popular.

Finishing and binding methods available

We have a wide range of binding methods available to suit a variety of applications.

Perfect or Notch Binding - Modern day systems create an almost indestructible spine, which is glued and the soft cover drawn on. Often we create limited numbers of hard cover versions for presentation copies within this method. This is the most cost effective method for the majority of books. Again our expertise in book printing helps us guide you through the most appropriate paper stock to use.

Section Sewn - Another virtually indestructible method of binding where pages are sewn together. This method allows for durability of use with reference books. While this process is quite costly, and less popular these days, it does give versatility for both hard and soft cover books.

Saddle Stitched - This is a stapling method which is suitable for smaller booklets up to 72 pages. It is very economical.

Steel Channel Spine Covers - These are premanufactured covers of varying spine thickness where A4 loose sheets are glued and held into the spine. They look like hard bound covers but at an economical price for small quantities. There is also a cheaper version that has clear acetate front and back. These are ideal for short run genealogies.

Plastic Coil Binding - A plastic spiral type spine which is very suitable for cook books or manuals where lying flat when opened is a requirement.
